Password-protect a PDF so only people with the password can open it. The file is encrypted right in your browser — nothing is uploaded, and your password never leaves your device, so it works even offline once the page has loaded.

How to password-protect a PDF

  1. Add your PDF. Drop a single PDF onto the dropzone or click to choose one from your device.
  2. Set a password. Type a password (at least 3 characters) and re-enter it to confirm; tick "Show password" if you want to check what you typed.
  3. Protect with password. Click "Protect with password" and the PDF is encrypted with standard PDF security on your device.
  4. Download the protected file. Save the encrypted PDF from the export screen; opening it anywhere will now require the password you set.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF or password uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is encrypted entirely in your browser and neither the file nor the password ever leaves your device, so we never see either one.

Is it free and do I need an account?

Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up. Just open the page, add your PDF, and set a password.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser — pick a PDF, set a password, and download the protected file the same way as on desktop.

What if I forget the password?

There's no recovery. Because the encryption happens locally and we never store your password, a forgotten password means the file can't be reopened — keep it somewhere safe.

What kind of encryption does it use?

It applies standard PDF password security (RC4/AES), so the protected file opens with the password in any standard PDF viewer.

How many files can I protect at once?

One PDF at a time. Load a file, protect it, then choose another to protect the next one.
